Help and Support for Those Affected by Cancer

We are a group of people, most of whom have experienced the illness in one form or another. The aim of our Group is to help men and women affected by cancer.

The illness and its secondary effects touches people in different ways, and the volunteers are willing to help allay fears or concerns that may occur during and after the actual treatment. Here’s what we can offer:

Drivers and Escorts

We can transport cancer patients to and from hospital appointments.

Translators

Translators can help you or a loved one with various tasks, including clinic and hospital appointments (there may be translator fees involved).

Carers/Buddies

We can sit with a cancer patient (to give respite to the personal carer). We can help with shopping, making a cup of tea, or just by being there to listen to what’s going on in your life…

Up-to-date Information

We keep in touch with the latest developments in medicine, and can give you information on all types of cancer and treatments.

Support – What Does It Mean?

[suh-pawrt, -pohrt]- to carry all or part of the weight of; keep from falling or sinking or failing; enable to last out; give strength to.

That’s the dictionary definition and that’s what we want to achieve with the work that we do.

But we can’t achieve it without being supported ourselves, by wonderful members of the public and local organisations, who are tireless in raising money for us or offering us sponsorship.

Our Heartfelt Thanks to All of You!

From the bars and shops that place our collection tins and sell our badges on their counters, to those who will do the maddest things to raise money for us – we salute you all!

Sometimes It’s Difficult to Ask for Help…

Most of us have been raised to be self-sufficient and keep a ‘stiff upper lip’. The good thing about MABS is that most of our volunteers have been touched by cancer and have a good idea what callers are going through.

We respect a person’s privacy so we’re not pushy and we don’t impose – if you don’t want to do something, we won’t labour the point – it’s your life and your decision.

But, if you need us, we’ll be right by your side, every step of the way.

So, don’t be afraid to get in touch, no matter how nervous you are or how small you think your request is – help is just a phone call away.
